The challenge

City intersections often witness up to 29 times higher pollution than open roads. Half of these emissions are generated by traffic accelerating after stopping. However, improving traffic light timing is a challenge for many cities, as it traditionally requires either installing costly hardware or running manual vehicle counts, both of which are expensive and often fail to provide all the necessary information.

How Green Light helps cities

Green Light provides an AI-powered solution that models traffic patterns and develops intelligent recommendations for city traffic engineers.
The process is as follows:

Understanding the intersection

Green Light infers existing traffic light parameters, including cycle length, transition time, and green split.

Measuring traffic trends

It creates a model to understand how traffic flows through the intersection. This helps to understand typical traffic patterns, including patterns of starting and stopping, and average wait times.

Developing recommendations for the city

Using AI, Green Light identifies possible adjustments to traffic light timing and shares these as actionable recommendations with the city’s traffic engineers.

Analyzing impact

After a recommendation has been implemented, Green Light measures the impact to stops and fuel consumption.

It requires no additional hardware purchase, installation, or maintenance, as it works with a city’s existing infrastructure and traffic systems. City traffic engineers can review the recommendations, approve them, and implement them in as little as five minutes using their existing tools.

Green Light has become an essential component of Kolkata Traffic Police. It serves several valuable purposes which contribute to safer, more efficient, and organized traffic flow and has helped us to reduce gridlock at busy intersections. Since November 2022, we have implemented suggestions at 13 intersections. The outcome is excellent as per the feedback from commuters and traffic personnel.
